There are plenty of brand new nests of tables on the market today, and it is usually quite easy to find something that will fit in with your own tastes.
But you might already have a nest of tables that you want to keep. The trouble is it might be looking a little bit the worse for wear. Can you do anything about it, or should you buy a new one?
A lot depends on what the tables are made from. For example, glass ones will eventually get scratched if they aren’t kept well and they are quite cheap in nature. But wooden ones are very different. If you have a wooden nest of tables you can sand them all down and refinish them if you wish. In fact, if you decide to buy a new set and you can’t quite find what you want, you could employ this technique even though the tables are brand new.
The first step is to take them back to their basic state. Sand off any varnish, paint or stain so that you can see just the bare wood beneath. Do make sure you check that the tables are made from solid wood before you start though. It won’t work if you try this with tables made from a wood veneer. A veneer is just a very thin layer of wood, so if you try and sand it you will be left looking at chipboard or something similar.
The next step is to think about how you want to finish it. Do you want to stain it or varnish it? Or would you prefer to paint it?
You might like to think about where the tables will be going before you do this. For example they might look good in a conservatory, and if this is the case you might want to paint them all different colours. Pastel colours can work well if you are going to put plants on top of each table; they are in keeping with the generally bright and airy feel of the conservatory. Dark colours won’t work as well here.
If you are good at painting you could even paint a picture on the top of each one. Some nests of tables like this are quite stunning to look at, so if you have the talent why not flaunt it? You will end up with a nest of tables that is quite unlike anything else anyone else might have.
The great thing about wooden nests of tables is that you can sand them down and refinish them as often as you like. If you buy them in any other form there isn’t usually a lot you can do except to give them a good clean.
But in any event, make sure you keep them as free from damage and harm as you can. If you spill anything on them wipe it up as soon as possible. This will keep them looking good for a long time.
